Julian Critchlow, Bain

Julian Critchlow is a partner in the London office. He joined Bain in 1987 as an associate consultant and has worked in the London and San Francisco offices. He obtained his MBA, with distinction, from the Wharton School of Business (1989-1991) where he was funded by Bain. He was promoted to manager in March 1995 and partner in December 1998. 

He has 22 years of consulting experience across all aspects of strategy, performance improvement, organisation and merger integration for global clients, particularly within utility, engineering and technology & telecoms sectors. He is head of Bain’s Global Utilities Practice, a member of the Industrial Goods & Services and Technology, Media & Telecoms practices.

Prior to joining Bain, Julian attended Cambridge University where he received an M.A. and M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering and worked with ICI and Exxon as a Chemical Engineer. In the late 1980s, he started a training company based on one of the first computerised business simulations. He was a seed investor in www.active-hotels.com and advised the Board on strategy until its sale to PriceLine in October 2004.

In his free time, Julian has run 2 (very slow) London Marathons in 1997 & 2002 and swum the English Channel three times, solo in 2004 (14 hours 8 minutes), as the leader of a relay in 2006 (16 hours 50 minutes) and in relay as part of the Arch to Arc challenge in 2010. Julian is on the National Board of Business Action on Homelessness, a Business in the Community initiative.
