Maloney's Budgens

Santander Small Company of the Year Award

Maloney’s Retail Stores is an independently family owned business whose stores are a vital part of their local community. Their concern for the environment has seen them become anchor stores for their community, working with schools, community groups and their suppliers. Since the implementation of their community plan they have seen a 10% increase in sales across their stores.

In order to reinvigorate the community they talked to hundreds of businesses in their community to understand the most urgent needs, from this they developed and implemented a Community Plan. Their broad ranging initiatives include supporting a struggling school, re-establishing the Chamber of Commerce, developing a  home delivery service for those people with different levels of disability run on a not-for-profit basis and raising the profile of small local quality producers.

Some of the impacts of the Community Plan include:

  • Delivery of £500,000 of sales for local producers
  • Benefited over 500 children in previously failing local schools
  • 20 reduction in the amount of CO2 emission in one storeVince Maloney
  • Employees have given up their time to organise community events and donated over £10k for local schools and community groups

Vince Maloney, Director Maloney’s Budgens said:  We are delighted to have won this award. It has taken three years of dedication and hard work by everyone involved to create a company that we are all proud of. The recognition of our achievement by BITC is something we never expected.
