Environment Walk the Talk

As one of Business in the Community’s four impact pillars, the environment is a key area of our Walk the Talk activities.  It is guided by the Environment Walk the Talk team, consisting of Environmental Champions from across the organisation.

2009-2010 activities

Some of Business in the Community's environmental achievements for 2009-2010 included:

  • Increased measurement management to measure car mileage across the organisation
  • Awareness raising weeks to encourage the take up of sustainable business and commuting travel methods.
  • Working towards BS8901, the British Standard for Sustainable Events for our hgh-profile events.
  • We joined the World Community Grid to make use of our spare computing capacity
  • We removed 16 of our computer servers and replaced the remaining with more efficient models as well as removed redundant kit from our cooler room - resulting in an annual saving of around 56 megawatt hours.

2008 - 2009 activities

In the 2007-2008 financial year Business in the Community developed its environmental activities including:

  • Signing up to the climate change awareness raising campaign 10:10 (link to www.1010uk.org).
  • Running 3 awareness raising campaigns at the Head Office including a ‘Don’t be rubbish’ campaign which raised employee awareness of the recycling facilities available on site. This was followed-up by the removal of individual desk bins. An initiative also taken up by the Northern Ireland offices.
  • Additional recycling facilities have been made available at Head Office and many regional offices.
  • Transport for London spoke to employees in the Head Office about cycling and pedestrian safety in London.
  • Pilot scheme to switch all PC’s to hibernation mode after 15 minutes of inactivity.
