Awards for Excellence 2011 - All Results

On 8 June 2011 Business in the Community announced this year's Awards for Excellence Big Tick winners in the Financial Times Responsible Business supplement.

Big Ticks are awarded to companies whose programmes have demonstrated the positive impact of responsible business. Finalists went forward to judging panels, which selected the overall winners, the Examples of Excellence, in each category, whcih were announced at the Royal Albert Hall.

Including all national and regional award entries, BITC received 394 Award entries in 2011. 123 entries resulted in National Big Tick awards, and 65 of these were shortlisted for the Example of Excellence within their category. 87 companies had their 2009/2010 national Big Ticks reaccredited this year.

This year's national results are as follows;

Most categories focus on company programmes across a range of CR topics such as Education, or Supply Chain Management, whilst three categories look at a company’s overall respon­sible business performance - the Company of the Year Award; the Small Company of the Year Award; and the Environmental Leadership Award.

Maloney's Retail Stores

Maloney’s Retail Stores is an independently family owned business whose stores are a vital part of their local community. Their concern for the environment has seen them become anchor stores for their community, working with schools, community groups and their suppliers. Since the implementation of their community plan they have seen a 10% increase in sales across their stores.

Anglo American Responsible Supply Chain Award

Demonstrating innovation and positive impact across the supply chain

Marks and Spencer: Going Beyond Monitoring

Marks and Spencer is showing leadership by going beyond monitoring and working closely with their suppliers to encourage the business case and to act on sustainability through training and best practise projects.  2900 suppliers attended M&S global conferences in 2010 to share best practice.

Unipart Group of Companies: The Unipart Way

Unipart collaborates with suppliers, partners and clients to reduce the carbon footprint in the supply chain. In 2009 Unipart achieved 23% waste reduction from landfill and increased proportion of waste recycled by 19%. Water consumption has fallen by 18% compared to 2008.

The Co-operative Group: combating climate change

The Co-operative Group has focused on reducing its own emissions as well as the provision or withholding of finances, reducing the impact of the products and services offered.  The aim is to help UK communities take action on climate change and campaigning for the strong regulation that is necessary to bring about a low carbon economy.  The Co-op’s gross direct greenhouse gases have reduced by 21% since 2006, while a third of The Co-operative Bank’s customers have cited ethics or the environment as a reason for opening and maintaining an account.

Cooper Parry: Looking after Number One

After the ‘credit crunch’, Cooper Parry was proactive about supporting the wellbeing of their team members and helping them to make healthy choices in their lives inside and outside of work.  Their subsequent programme reduced absence by 42% to a record low of 1.23%, which resulted in a cost saving of £156,000.

IFFCO Kisan Sanchar Ltd - mPo: a unique mobile service empowering farmers through timely information delivery

To help improve the quality of living of poor and illiterate farmers in India the M-Powering Farmers Mobile Phone initiative was developed to provide agricultural information via mobile phone to aid famers in developing a more productive, profitable and sustainable agricultural sector in India. The challenge in the beginning was to overcome the high levels of illiteracy and the famer’s inability to deal with technology - the solution, a voice based service in their local language and a locally based support team.  Results show a significant improvement with an increase in farm productivity, in terms of crops and animals, with over 750 scientifically tracked and proven success stories documented.

Bluestone Resorts Ltd- Bluestone biomass partnership with PBE/PBESCO - Example of Excellence 2011

Bluestone National Park is a five-star short-break destination whose decision to invest in locally sourced renewable biomass fuel has had significant business, environmental and community benefits. Bluestone is believed to be the first in the world heated exclusively by energy crops grown by local farmers co-operative. It spends over £50,000 a month on biomass, far less then it would spend on the equivalent amount of oil. The investment also aids the local economy and has measurable environmental benefits saving 3000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Raising the achievement of young people through sustainable partnerships with schools

Bank of America Merrill Lynch - London Schools Programme

BofAML have shown a sustained commitment to their volunteering programme and produced outstanding results in response to Osmani Primary School failing its Ofsted inspection in 1999, BofAML subsequently launched a volunteer programme and in 2001 the school was named Most Improved School in the Country.  12 years on, more than 1,000 BofAML volunteers have supported the school. In the last six years, the percentage of students achieving at least 5 good GCSEs (including English and Maths), has increased by 78%.

Affinity Sutton Helping People Put Down Roots

Affinity Sutton is one of the largest providers of affordable housing in England.  Affinity Sutton's community investment programme supports its residents and communities across three areas: jobs, money and community.  In 18 months from 2009-2011,1,215 people have been helped into training, 186 people have been helped directly into work, 1,545 people have secured affordable financial products and 766 people have received budgeting advice/training.

Norse Commercial Services Work Inclusion Award

Lend Lease - BeOnsite

LendLease’s BeOnsite provides people from excluded groups with industry-relevant training and sustained employment within the property industry. To date, 3,000 have been supported through job brokerage, 216 people have been provided with training and over 50% of participants have remained in direct employment with BeOnsite for more than 6 months.

Lakehouse Learning World

In 2007 Lakehouse established a new training strategy to tie in with their business plan, with ambitious targets including ensuring all staff had at least an NVQ 2 qualification. The business has grown by 50% year on year over the past two financial years, which has only been possible by attracting talent and retaining existing employees.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Green Travel Plan

In order to meet the overarching goal of long-term sustainability, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have taken a holistic approach to fleet management; reducing direct and embedded CO2 emissions at all stages in the vehicle lifecycle, from construction to day-to-day use and final disposal.  Over 2009/10 the measured cost savings for the 5 network members reached £786,020 - with a reduction in CO2 emissions of 7,900 tonnes.

Channel 4's 'Kick Start' Programme

Channel 4’s  ‘Kick Start’ programme provides inspiration and aspiration to young people who want to work in the media; by creating opportunities for them to understand the skills, experiences and attitudes needed to work in this sector. The programme has a specific focus on young people from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.  34% of alumni over 18 had gained employment in the industry since taking part in the scheme.
