ASDA logo - saving your money every day

For companies demonstrating leadership in environmental sustainability by embedding environmental strategy into core business processes.

This award is only open to gold or platinum band companies in Environment module of the CR Index.

Future business success depends on embracing environmental sustainability at the very heart of how you do business

Andy ClarkeChief Executive, ASDA

This category  goes beyond the management processes assessed in the CR Index, to explore more deeply whether environmental issues are really embedded at the heart of the business and whether that business is demonstrating leadership through inspiring others.

Assessors for this award will be looking for measurable impact, continuous improvement and demonstration that the business, as a whole, is continually raising the bar and distinguishing itself from its peers. They will also be looking for evidence of business planning past the next 3-5 years addressing longer term challenges your business will face in 2020 and beyond.

The application may focus on a specific environmental issue but the impact of it needs to be substantial enough to classify the business as a ‘leader’.

Leadership can be interpreted in a variety of ways but we will be recognising businesses demonstrating the following forms of leadership:

Overall business leadership, for example:

  •  the business driving change in operational practices across their sector
  • changing product or service provision for predominantly environmental reasons
  • going beyond good practice in challenging and supporting clients or suppliers on environmental best practice

Senior Management leading by example, for example:

  • daily commitment by the CEO to drive change throughout the business
  • involvement of Senior Managers in driving policy changes or government consultations
  • senior business leaders as vocal advocates for environmental sustainability both within and outside of the business

Individual leadership, for example:

  • employees across all parts of the business encouraged to work sustainably
  • sustainability leadership skills developed throughout the organisation
  • all employees have a sense of ownership of the business’ environmental strategy

Applicants are reminded to focus on a breadth of environmental issues with a focus on sustainability. Issues addressed may range from sustainable resource consumption and production to waste, water and biodiversity.
