Businesses respond to the Government's aspiration of the Big Society

Stephen Howard CEO Business in the Community"Our Leadership Survey tells us that 77% of business leaders say they could do more to scale-up strategic support for communities across their business, and we hope that the Government’s Big Society agenda will provide the opportunity we have all been waiting for to increase the scale and impact of this support.  We have been working with the Government identify the barriers to increasing business engagement and unleashing the creativity and enthusiasm that we already know exists in UK companies."

"As part of Business in the Community’s follow up to our Leadership Summit with HRH The Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister in December, we are organising a series of special Seeing is Believing visits around the country under the banner of Transforming Business, Transforming Communities.

"The aim of this programme is to explore and showcase successful examples of business action in local communities that tackles the most pressing social issues, in order that these solutions can be replicated and developed in other places.

"We hope that this will encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas between locations.  You are welcome to nominate a senior colleague to attend visits as well to gain insights into more than one example.

  • Examples of best practice

Mobilising our member companies to work collaboratively in the most disadvantaged communities has been at the heart of our agenda over the last 28 years and we understand the contribution business can make to create sustainable communities. These case studies represent the best examples from our member companies.

  • Visit Programme

This special visit programme will explore and showcase successful examples of business action in local communities that tackles the most pressing social issues, in order that these solutions can be replicated and developed in other places.

  • What businesses think - consultation

We consulted our membership on what they see as the opportunities and barriers to increasing engagement in local communities; and businesses’ response to the Government’s ‘Big Society’ vision.

  • Business Connectors

Our consultation with businesses showed that they are already providing considerable support to local communities but key to unlocking, enabling and increasing sustained effective community engagement, is the presence of a broker on the ground.

  • The Government's view on the Big Society

The Government has made a commitment to help businesses succeed so they can create the jobs, wealth and opportunity needed. Government also sets out five priorities it would like businesses to commit to.

  • MP's Toolkit for Responsible Business

The MP's Toolkit for Responsible Business has been developed to inform MPs about what responsible business is, why it is important for your constituency and how you can encourage business engagement.
