UBS in Hackney

Carsten Kengeter, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, UBS Investment Bank. This visit will look at how companies can contribute to the social and economic regeneration of disadvantaged communities.

Specifically it will look at how UBS has helped to address the economic and social deprivation of the City’s disadvantaged neighbouring boroughs, through a combination of educational and regeneration initiatives and partnerships, and at the value of a broker, a “connector”, with experience of successful business/community collaboration.

Decades of disparate initiatives addressing deprived communities have proved unsuccessful, but the example of Hackney provides growing evidence that strategic, private sector collaboration with the public and voluntary sector can make significant progress / break the cycle. UBS has consistently been at the forefront of this work in Hackney through a range of public and also less well known activity.

The most compelling feedback from BITC's recent consultation with its members was the assertion that quality brokerage (or the 'connecting' of business with a community of need) is fundamental to business engaging in effective and relevant ways in their communities and specifically with the public and voluntary sectors. This feature of business engagement has also been highlighted and sought by government at the highest level.
