Economic renewal

Future High Streets - Businesses going local May 2011

What does economic renewal mean?

As employers, customers and suppliers as well as partners and investors in the community, companies play a vital role in maintaining the health of the communities in which they operate.

Our latest research, Future High Streets - Businesses going local was launched on 24 May 2011 at a Seeing is Believing visit in Maidstone, led by Alec Gourlay of Boots, and attended by Ed Davey MP, Minister for Employment Relations, Consumer and Postal Affairs. Read the report here.

Led by the Business Action on Economic Renewal Leadership Team, chaired by Charlie Mayfield, Chairman, John Lewis Partnership, the campaign leads on research and development of innovative approaches to business engagement with local communities - driving up both the quality and quantity of this engagement to improve the social and economic wellbeing of communities.

What we're currently working on

  • Future High Streets

High streets are under pressure, but in spite of the current challenges there are town and city centres which are sustaining growth in difficult economic times. This work looks at some of the things that make these successful including strong business-led partnerships and locally active store managers.

  • Community Footprint

We are developing an easy to use series of tools allowing companies to assess the socio-economic contribution their business makes to the communities they work in. This work builds on our long experience in working with the property and construction sectors to focus on social, economic and environmental sustainability to understand the impact of a new development on an area.

  • Enterprise Inquiries supported by Santander

Santander is supporting Business in the Community to deliver three Enterprise Inquiries in November.  We want to identify some of the ways larger businesses can stand alongside small businesses and social enterprises in these difficult times.

  • Featured recent research

Recent highlights of the team's work include: groundbreaking research and pilots into partnerships between businesses and social landlords as  a powerful way to reach some of the most disadvantaged communities; and how businesses are responding to the challenges raised by the growing body of evidence behind the effect of social and economic status on an individual's health.
