Hostels and agencies: take action

Business Action on Homelessness helps homeless clients to gain and sustain employment and enjoy successful lives. We work with hostels and agencies in 20 locations throughout the UK.

Business Action on Homelessness' local Ready for Work Managers work in partnership with keyworkers, helping them to identify clients who are able and actively looking to gain employment. These clients will benefit from the Ready for Work programme.

Who is 'ready for work'?

To meet our 'ready for work' criteria, clients must have been homeless within the last two years, or must currently be homeless. This includes clients who are currently or have recently been living in hostels, supported accommodation, or who have experienced any insecure housing arrangement. Insecure housing can include living with friends, in National Asylum Support Service accommodation or B&Bs.

All clients must be referred to the programme by a third party - this can be a hostel, an employment programme or another type of organisation. Agencies must have known the client for at least three months to accurately assess their suitability for the Ready for Work programme.

Clients must be eligible to work in the UK and have approved refugee status or leave to remain. Clients must be able to demonstrate basic skills including the ability to read and write in English.

Any client with a conviction will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. We do not accept clients with current alcohol, substance abuse or mental health issues. Any past issues need to have been ‘under control’ for at least six months prior to clients entering the programme.
