Frequently asked questions

Below are some frequently asked questions about what professional firms can offer the voluntary and community sector and how firms should work with them.

What can I offer the voluntary and community sector?

Almost any professional service you could offer a fee-paying client will be equally applicable to a voluntary or community group.  The clients are slightly different, and of course there's no billing for the project, but there is a huge need for all forms of professional service to be provided free at the point of delivery.  Examples include general consultancy and organisational development, preparation of business plans, surveying, achitectural services, marketing, information technology, property advice, accoutancy and financial advice to name but a few.  If you want to help but don't know how, ask us and we can explore the options with you.  Please note that membership of ProHelp is open only to professoinal firms and not individuals.

What are my responsibilities?

We ask that you treat the voluntary and community organisations in the same professional manner as if they were a fee-paying client.  You'll never be asked to take on a project if you don't want to - all projects are offered by choice.  The ProHelp manager will discuss with you the amount and type of support you are committing for the year and any particular community interests you may have.

What will my business get out of ProHelp?

There is a compelling business case for working with ProHelp.  You will have an opportunity to network with like-minded firms, develop new client relationship management skills through working with a different client base.  Firms are increasingly using pro bono work to develop the skills of their employees and linking to their Continuing Professional Development programme.

Can anybody join?

Membership of ProHelp is open only to professional firms and not individuals.  There are many valuable ways a business and individual employees can support the local community including Cares, Business in the Community's employee volunteering programme.
