Cares in the East of England

Cares is Business in the Community’s national campaign to engage employees in their communities through volunteering.  More than 400 companies support city-based and regional Cares partnerships in 32 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In the East of England  Cares operates in Cambridge, Peterborough, Watford, and surrounding area, St Albans, Norwich, Ipswich and Norfolk.

Cares in the Eastern Region has taken on diverse challenges ranging from the creation of a wildlife area using native species to provide a study and recreational resource for a school,  to the redecoration of a womans refuge. Volunteers can get involved through Team Challenges, Action Days and Individual Volunteering. Companies take the initiative in these challenges, providing the vital resources and man power,  using the challenge as a team building exercise that also benefits the community.

Other challenges throughout the Eastern Region include:

• The creation of a Medititerranean Courtyard for a school.
• Re - daubing the Round House at Flag Fen ( using a mixture of of sand, cement and earth )
• Redecorating rooms in two childrens' hospices in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich
• Making environmentally friendly covers to hide wheelie bins at Flag Fen Bronze Age Settlement.

An ongoing challenge is at The Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe Moor near Fakenham, a nature reserve dedicated to the conservation of of all wild birds of prey including the creation and conservation of their habitats. Teams from local buisnesses have been helping to resore wetland to increase the diversity of flora and fauna on the site and builiding boardwalks.
