East of England Environment Index results 2008

The East of England Environment Index 2008 results were released in December 2008.  The publication includes highlights from this year’s Index, as well as a table with all those companies that chose to be listed publicly in the Index.

28 companies from across the region completed the Environment Index survey in 2008.   The average overall score of companies completing the survey was 68/100, 74% of organisations participating in the East of England Environment Index have appointed a main board member with specific environmental responsibility and 87% regularly discuss environmental issues at board level.

Climate change is the top environmental issue of our time. Organisations participating in the Index are recognising this, with 93% measuring and reporting their impact on Climate Change.

The Business in the Community Environment Index is the UK’s leading self-assessed corporate environmental benchmarking tool. It enables organisations to measure their impact on the environment and compare performance.

The index assesses companies performance on a range of environmental criteria including waste management, climate change and energy use.

Mike Brophy, Business in the Community East of England said: ”I’d like to congratulate the company on its performance particularly as one of the Index’s strengths is ensuring that environmental management is kept on boardroom level and this is significantly the case with Anglian Water.”

Anglian Water’s Head of Corporate Responsibility, Phil Brown said:

”The Environment Index benchmarks companies against their peers, and against all companies that participate in the Index, on the basis of their environmental management and performance in key impact areas.The Executive Summary contains company bandings, comparing the UK’s leading businesses against all other companies that participated in the Index, and their sector competitors. It also provides top-line results from the Environment Index, demonstrating the level of corporate engagement on issues including climate change, water use and waste.

It is essential reading for companies that wish to compare performance within their sector or wish to participate in the Environment Index themselves.
