By the nature of its business, limestone quarry and manufacturing business Kilwaughter Chemical Co Ltd traditionally has an inherently high demand on energy. Signing up to a 10:10 campaign, it aimed to reduce energy use by 10% in a year; an enormous challenge which would involve the whole company.

Recycling heat save £s
As part of an ongoing programme of investment to reduce its environmental impact, £85,000 was authorised for the installation of a new heat recovery system. This system recovers heat normally wasted to atmosphere from the site’s largest refrigeration system to preheat warm water.

Reducing CO2
Belfast Harbour reduces carbon emissions from in-house operations by reducing demand and controlling consumption wherever possible. It utilises technological solutions such as low-energy lighting combined with daylight and occupancy sensing to reduce the electricity used to light its workshops. It has also made improvements to the heating system and boilers in the Harbour Office which have resulted in energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions by a further 45 tonnes.

H & J Martin recognises the importance of energy management in its maintenance contracts, especially as its sites often cater for thousands of staff and pupils. It regularly monitors performance at all sites and uses the data to benchmark and set targets.

NI Water picks up top environment award
NI Water has been hailed a ‘National Green Champion’ by the Green Organisation for its work on the Rural Wastewater Investment Programme – a project designed specifically by NI Water to upgrade small wastewater facilities in villages and hamlets across Northern Ireland where the population is less than 250 people.

Coolkeeragh ESBIE reduces energy requirements
The combined-cycle gas turbine plant at Coolkeeragh was developed by Coolkeeragh ESB Limited, a partnership between ESB International and Coolkeeragh Power Limited. The station was commissioned in June 2005 and is being operated and maintained by ESBIE O&M Solutions in line with best international practice for power generation stations.
