British American Tobacco - Supply Chain Programme

BAT’s supply chain programme helps increase the productivity of their leaf suppliers through the development of good agronomy practices and enables them to purchase from responsible and sustainable sources. In return BAT encourages suppliers to offer farmers the highest standards of labour, welfare and employment conditions through a programme of continual employment.

South Africa is experiencing some of the worst impacts of HIV and AIDS. More than 5.8 million people are HIV positive with an average prevalence rate of 12 per cent. Twenty per cent of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 are infected. Annually, new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths are between 400,000 and 500,000.

Our Group purchases approximately 400,000 tonnes of tobacco leaf a year, around 80 per cent of it by volume from farmers and suppliers in emerging economies. We aim to ensure that we only purchase leaf from responsible and sustainable sources
