Getting online: BT Internet Rangers arrive in Pembrokeshire
Children from Pembrokeshire schools will be turning into teachers this month as an internet awareness programme starts in the county.
Six schools will be running a BT Internet Rangers programme, in which young people take on the role of tutor and help family members to get to grips with the internet.
Ann BeynonBT Director WalesNot everyone has access to a computer at home, but this doesn't mean they should miss out on the chance to learn internet skills. We’re delighted that pupils across Pembrokeshire will get the chance to pass on their skills and knowledge to help their parents and grandparents through these BT Internet Ranger sessions.”
Run by BT Wales in partnership with Business in the Community, the programme celebrates the role young people play in helping to bridge the gap between them and the older generation's knowledge of IT.
With many people in Wales missing out on the benefits of the internet including making financial savings, the sessions will provide further internet and learning opportunities for adults, helping families to take advantage of all the internet has to offer.
Catherine Palmer of BITC said the sessions will also provide a greater awareness of internet safety:
“As the everyday use of technology grows, it’s important that we understand enough to be able to keep our children safe – particularly regarding their use of internet and mobile technology. The internet is a great tool for communication, entertainment and education, but our children should be just as aware of the dangers online as they are of those on the streets.”
Ann Beynon, BT Director Wales said: "Not everyone has access to a computer at home, but this doesn't mean they should miss out on the chance to learn internet skills.
"Access to the internet can help improve people's lives, opening the doors to education and employment and allowing them to stay in touch with family and friends.
"We’re delighted that pupils across Pembrokeshire will get the chance to pass on their skills and knowledge to help their parents and grandparents through these BT Internet Ranger sessions.”
Pembrokeshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and Welsh Language, Councillor Huw George, said the Authority was delighted to be working closely with BT and Business in the Community to highlight this agenda.
"In a knowledge-based economy, an understanding of the capability of technology is vital for all members of the community and we are keen to play our part" he added.
