Bain & Company was founded in 1973. It has since worked with 3,300 clients from virtually every industry and currently has around 2,400 consultants worldwide. Its headquarters are in Boston, and it has 37 offices in major cities on six continents.
Bain helps companies outstrip competitors, and clients have traditionally outcompeted the stock market by 4:1. Its slogan is ‘Helping make companies more valuable’.
Bain Capital spun off in 1983–84 to become a leading private investment firm. Bridgespan was also spun off in 2000 as a non-profit consultancy.

In 1998, Bain & Company was on the steering group for Business Action on Homelessness, a programme aimed at encouraging businesses to offer work placements to the homeless. Bain dedicated three consultants for several months to work on the programme. Bain also offered four work placements in 2005 (two of which have since made the transition to stable employment), with six planned for 2006.
In 2005, Bain staff gave 2,000 hours to community programmes, with 96 (31%) participating in ongoing Bain Cares projects, and 75% participating in the annual Christmas volunteering day.
Bain has funded and worked pro bono with a number of social initiatives globally, eg for Boys and Girls Clubs of America (Atlanta), California Business Roundtable (San Francisco) and La Fondation pour l’Enfance (Paris).
Bain & Company is also a strategic partner of the World Economic Forum for world progress.
