Barratt is Britain's biggest housebuilder working in locations across the United Kingdom. The company was established in 1958 in Newcastle upon Tyne and was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1968.

Today the Group comprises over 30 house divisions, building and selling over 14,000 new homes a year on over 430 developments from Aberdeen to Plymouth in both urban and rural areas.

In 2000, Barrett’s launched a sister company – KingsOak Homes – which has become one of the fastest-growing names in the industry, operating throughout the Midlands, the South and South West.

Responsible Business
The company serves all sectors of the housebuilding market including homes for rent , shared ownership and those in partnership with local authorities and housing associations. They have been a pioneer in inner city regeneration and brownfield development, exceeding Government targets by building over 80% of new developments on recycled land.

The company has a history of working towards sustainable social, economic and environmental business practices, but over recent years have made particular advances in formalising their policies, embedding them in working practices and reporting them transparently. A recent success has been the introduction of an ISO14001 certified environmental management system at six divisions.

Through such initiatives Barratt is beginning to see the business benefits that their commitment to responsible practices is bringing. They have achieved considerable improvements in health and safety performance with no Health and Safety Executive (HSE) interventions in 2005 and have significantly reduced the average tonneage of waste generated per development.
