Balfour Beatty operates through four business streams: Building, Building Management and Services; Civil and Specialist Engineering and Services; Rail Engineering and Services; and Investments and Developments. Founded in 1909, it employs over 30,000 employees in over 20 countries.

Its approach to corporate responsibility is structured around Safety, Environment, Social and Health. It's first Safety, Environment and Social report was published in 2001. It has recently established a set of ethical and behavioural guidelines for all companies in the group. It has also reviewed its charities policy, increasing its donations and focusing them on a smaller number of causes. In 2007, these include NCH, the children's charity, Groundwork UK and The Prince's Trust's Building Better Lives.

At local level, Balfour Beatty operating divisions are involved in a range of community projects related to sites, offices and PFI concessions. It has completed the Business in the Environment Index for the past six years and achieved a score of 79.81% in 2007.

Balfour Beatty won the Corporate Social Responsibility Achievement Award at the 2006 Quality in Construction Awards.
