Four businesses in North Wales have been presented with Healthy Working Wales awards for their commitment to investing in and improving the health and well-being of their workforce.The employers, which together employ over 1,500 staff, were presented with the Corporate Health Standard at an employer engagement seminar at UPM Shotton organised by Business in the Community and the Welsh Assembly Government. Members of the Green Business Skills Forum met with the Minister for Environment Sustainability and Housing and the Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration to outline the importance of green skills in helping Wales through its economic recovery.Convened by Business in the Community Wales, the Green Business Skills Forum has been in operation since March 2010 and is seeking to maximise sustainable job growth related to the Welsh Assembly Government’s green agenda, specifically looking at the green skills agenda in the Heads of the Valleys.  Read more

Celebrating companies who are delivering successful responsible business programmes in Wales and at a national and international level, there are now two awards schemes that businesses in Wales are being encouraged to take part in. An SME recognised as being one of Swansea's most sustainable and environmentally friendly businesses opened its factory doors to companies across south Wales to inspire a greater business response to climate change.The manufacturing firm, AB Glass, whose dedicated green values and practices are highlighted by the host of sustainability awards the company has won, welcomed delegates from nearly 20 different organisations during a special visit organised by Business in the Community and led by leading welfare to work provider, Working Links. A group of north Wales based businesses are supporting a programme which helps homeless people enter the workplace.Royal Mail, UPM Shotton and Wates Living Space are among the companies backing Business Action on Homelessness (BAOH), a Business in the Community (BITC) initiative that provides people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless an opportunity to get training and work experience to help them on their journey back into work. Children from Pembrokeshire schools will be turning into teachers this month as an internet awareness programme starts in the county.Six schools will be running a BT Internet Rangers programme, in which young people take on the role of tutor and help family members to get to grips with the internet. Senior business people have been back to school in Merthyr as part of a collaborative effort to bridge the ‘green skills’ gap in the Heads of the Valleys (HOV).Delegates from Business in the Community’s (BITC) ‘Green Skills Business Forum’ were interviewed by 15 year old GCSE pupils from Pen Y Dre High School, during a ‘speed networking’ session to learn about green skills, and assess their compatibility as mentors. The entire workforce of Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA) have dug in deep for the local community, swapping a day in the office for hands-on sessions at various city projects. The 80-strong team from CCHA picked up shovels and paint brushes, and gave their day to gardening, decorating and DIY at Baden Powell Primary School, Splott Play Centre, St Germans Church and Garden, and Trowbridge Community Centre. Lakelands Hospice provides respite care facilities for adults in the Northamptonshire, South Leicestershire and Rutland area. Since opening, the hospice has helped over 2000 families and continues to grow in order to meet the great need for respite day care. The Centre provides an information and advice facility from a portacabin in the grounds which has come to the end of its useful life. They approached ProHelp in 2009 to apply for architectural support to undertake a feasibility study to provide options for the Centre to consider. Read more

Yesterday more than 300 Business Leaders heard both the First Minister Carwyn Jones AM and Paul Drechsler, Chairman and Chief Executive of Wates Construction at Business in the Community’s annual celebration of responsible business in Wales sponsored by Royal Mail and Wales and West Utilities. The Awards for Excellence are the UK’s most influential, independent, peer assessed corporate responsibility awards. ‘Big Tick’ accreditations are awarded to those companies who have shown innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to corporate responsibility.  Read more

Business in the Community has announced that it will launch its South and West Wales ProHelp network in November across Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot and Ceredigion. Established in 1989, ProHelp is a UK network of over 600 professionals, from large corporates to SMEs, providing advice and support free of charge to community and voluntary organisations in their local area.
