Bloomfield shopping centre achieves Green Dragon Environmental Management System

Bloomfield shopping centre has become Ireland's first shopping precinct accredited through the Green Dragon Environmental Management System. Administered by Arena Network NI, the environmental arm of Business in the Community, Green Dragon helps businesses tackle and manage environmental challenges.

We've reduced overall waste management costs by 33% in the last 3 years.

Jamie Bill, Centre Manager at Bloomfield is delighted the centre has reached such a high environmental standard.

He said; "Green Dragon has given a real boost towards creating an environmentally focused operations management structure at Bloomfield. Due to expansion, more waste has been handled but by various eco-friendly means we've reduced overall waste management costs by 33% in the last 3 years.

"On-site recycling was introduced to the centre in August 2007 and handling cardboard and plastics has resulted in a 26% year on year reduction. Many of our energy saving initiatives are in their infancy, but we are already noticing a distinct reduction in electricity consumption."

Michael Schwartzentruber, Project Manager at Arena Network, congratulated Bloomfield on this achievement and encouraged other organisations to follow their example.

He said; "Bloomfield recognise the importance of environmental responsibility and have taken measures to ensure they consider eco-friendly options.

"More and more consumers are becoming environmentally conscious and often search out businesses with 'green credentials'.
