DLA Piper helps pupils have fun with maths

DLA Piper is the first business in South Yorkshire to support the national Numbers Partners scheme which promotes the enjoyment of maths in primary and secondary schools.

Our staff value the opportunity to participate in a worthwhile scheme that benefits the local community. The sessions with the children are very rewarding, and great fun.

Each week motivated employees from the law firm give up an hour of their work time to join pupils at Woodthorpe Primary School and through the use of child-friendly games and puzzles help the children to develop their ability and confidence with numbers, plus their self esteem and communication skills.

Extra support

The scheme spear-headed by Business in the Community scheme supports the Government's National Numeracy Strategy which focuses on youngsters who can benefit from extra support with maths.

Dave Smith, Deputy Head at Woodthorpe Primary School said: "This partnership between DLA Piper and the school recognises the importance of numeracy to every child's long-term prospects.  We value the extra support that the Number Partner volunteers bring, which not only helps the pupils with their maths, but also improves their confidence and their teamwork skills."

Pupil Corey Whitehead said: "The best thing about having the Number Partners here is having fun while we learn about maths. And they tell us about their jobs - we call them the Legal Eagles!"
