Stephen HowardChief Executive, Business in the CommunityHealth and wellbeing needs to be an integral part of business strategy. This is why BITC is campaigning for 75% of FTSE 100 companies to publicly report on workplace health by 2011. By launching these tools we hope to provide HR and business directors with the necessary utensils to take action and enjoy a positive impact on their bottomline.
Developed in partnership with the HR consultancy Towers Perrin and created by the Food & Drink Federation in partnership with BITC, the Healthy Eating Toolkit draws on the collective experience of companies such as Cadbury, Kellogg and Tate & Lyle. It has been created by employers for employers, providing examples of best practice and explaining the business case for promoting healthy eating amongst employees. This is the first in a series of topic-specific toolkits to be launched by BITC, supplementing the Towers Perrin Workplace Action Pack.
The Towers Perrin Healthy Workplace Action Pack, launched in October, offers a simple 12 step approach for any employer wanting to create a healthier workforce. A key element of this is healthy eating, where currently just one in ten employers provide healthy food options and advice.
Business Action on Health research
These tools follow research from the Business Action on Health campaign showing that six in ten workers would consider quitting companies who fail to address health and wellbeing, and eight in ten say employers' attitudes towards health are an important factor when making a decision about a job. BITC's latest Corporate Responsibility Index, benchmarking responsible business, shows that businesses are increasingly responding to health and well being. with seven out of ten taking action.
