Legal Sector Alliance to launch bespoke carbon measurement tool

An alliance of legal firms has developed a tool to help firms in the sector measure their carbon footprints in a transparent, consistent and comparable way.

Having access to easy-to-use guidelines and tools specifically adapted for the sector will make it possible for more firms to implement effective changes.”

The Legal Sector Alliance Protocol distils the experiences of those firms that have already measured their carbon footprint to support those that haven’t, and consists of a simple spreadsheet-based measurement tool, with detailed accompanying guidance.

Measurement scope

The Protocol was developed following a survey run on the Legal Sector Alliance (LSA) website which showed that many firms have not measured their carbon footprint because they do not know where to start.

Based on the GHG Protocol, one of the most widely used international accounting tools for the measurement and management of greenhouse gas emissions, the tool is tailored to the sector, focussing on emissions from fuel use, electricity use and employee business travel.

Nigel Knowles, Joint CEO of DLA Piper and Chair of the Legal Sector Alliance said “Helping law firms to address climate change issues in a way that makes sense to them is central to the work of the Legal Sector Alliance...Having access to easy-to-use guidelines and tools specifically adapted for the sector will make it possible for more firms to implement effective changes.”

The launch

The Protocol will be launched on the Legal Sector Alliance website at the beginning of September. For more information on the Protocol, please visit the Legal Sector Alliance website or contact Debbi Christophers.
