People…Our Greatest Asset?

The health, morale and motivation of your workforce was on the agenda at Business in the Community’s breakfast meeting on Thursday 24th May in Newport.

Sponsored by and held at the Hilton Newport, the event featured inspiring examples from local businesses on how their commitment to community and employee development has underpinned their business success.

Nigel Roberts of Paramount Office Interiors outlined the measures he has taken to ensure a healthy workforce and workplace, while Janet Coward of Camelot demonstrated how a large-scale team building exercise successfully helped to develop staff relationships across the business.

The event also raised awareness of other workplace-related issues such as the cost of sickness absence – in 2005/06 30 million days were lost, 24 million due to work-related ill health and six million due to workplace injury*.

Encouraging businesses to improve health and well being at work in order to ensure long-term sustainability, Business in the Community’s Louise Aston, Director of Health outlined the vital steps that need to be taken.

She said: “Investing in the health and well-being of your employees is vital to the success of your business and can result in a range of bottom-line business benefits including reduced absence, recruitment, retention, health and litigation costs, as well as higher morale and loyalty, productivity, quality and customer satisfaction.”
