Road Safety On Agenda For Maesycoed Pupils
Business in the Community has teamed up with Royal Mail and the Community Police to raise awareness of road safety among Year 4 pupils in Pontypridd.
40 pupils from Maesycoed Primary School took part in ‘How Fast Can I Stop’ – a campaign which aims to highlight the importance of road safety and how to use the Green Cross Code correctly.
The Year 4 pupils were taken on a tour of Royal Mail’s delivery office in Pontypridd where they saw the fleet of Royal Mail delivery vans, received a presentation on road safety, including a demonstration of police radar guns and took part in an interactive quiz.
This is a major issue as according to Road Safety Wales, in 2006 10 children were killed, 134 seriously injured and 1153 slightly injured on Welsh roads - of which 33% were pedestrians.
Adrian Thomas, Area Transport Manager, Royal Mail South & West Wales said: “We are fully aware of the daily risks children face on our roads and these figures reinforce the importance for children to learn about road safety.
“We have supported this campaign for a number of years and were delighted to welcome the children from Maesycoed to our Pontypridd delivery office.”
Michael Edwards, Head Teacher at Maesycoed Primary School added: “This campaign is an innovative way of teaching children about road safety away from the classroom environment and has made a real impact on our Year 4 pupils.”
Owen Evans, Business in the Community Director Wales said: “With the rising number of young people being injured on our roads annually, children of all ages should be given the opportunity to have safety training in an interesting environment.
“Royal Mail has a huge fleet of vehicles on the road and we are delighted that they are helping to support these interactive sessions to teach children simple tips to be safe on the road in a fun and interesting way.”
