Right to Read
Every child has the right to read, but not every child has the opportunity. Business Action on Education’s mission is to substantially increase the number of trained volunteers providing support for children aged 7–12 and to raise literacy standards through Right to Read, a programme of one-to-one support from participating businesses and the community.
Mary Mundy and Colin Murray Eversheds LLP"We are both enjoying participating in the Right to Read scheme. As avid readers, passing on to the pupils our own enthusiasm for books is a pleasure and a privilege. So far the project has certainly exercised our own communication and listening skills in guiding the pupils through difficult prose and discussing what the children have read. Also the children and staff at our school have been very friendly so it makes a very pleasant break from the office!"
School Benefits
Reading support does not only substantially increase a child's reading levels but it also builds a child's self-esteem and aspirations and presents children with positive role models from business.
Business Benefits
Becoming a reading support volunteer improves staff motivation and can cultivate a 'feel-good factor' in the company. The company also benefits from increased publicity and public profile, and the knowledge that they are contributing towards a future generation of literate employees and consumers.
Time Commitment
After an initial half day training session, this programme requires a commitment of one hour a week for one school term.
