Dr Alan Lennon
Civil Service Commissioner
Educated at Down High School, Downpatrick, Alan Lennon studied mechanical engineering at Queen's University of Belfast where he was awarded a PhD in engineering. Alan joined ICI in 1980 and gained wide experience at senior managerial level within the company at a variety of the company's locations throughout the United Kingdom over 10 years.
In 1991 he
took up an appointment as Head of the Business Support Division with the
Training and Employment Agency, introducing a range of management development
approaches with N Ireland SMEs. Two years later he took up position as Managing
Director of Munster Simms Engineering Ltd in Bangor, and subsequently led a
management buyout. He left the Company in 2001.
Dr Lennon developed strong links with education through his work as a Council
and committee member with the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum,
Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). In April 1998, Dr Lennon became Chairman of
CCEA, a role which he performed for 9 years during which CCEA led major
curriculum and examinations changers and won awards for Business Excellence and
Best Companies to Work For.
Dr Lennon
has a number of business interests in Northern Ireland, currently chairing
three local companies. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster
and is an active independent business consultant.
Alan has a wide range of interests including golf and sailing and has sailed
off the French coast, Greek islands and the UK. He is also interested in music
and reading, particularly in relation to current thinking and practice in
management. Alan is a keen supporter of Manchester United Football Club. He is
married and has two children. He spends most of his spare time on landscaping.
