Deprived Areas- Working together to tackle important issues

Nobody should be disadvantaged by where they live but the sad reality is that they are. Business has a vital role to play in correcting this and can gain advantages in doing so, indeed we have many examples to prove it. Deprived areas will only be regenerated, where sustainable business and communities can both prosper, when shortage of jobs, local services and enterprise are properly addressed. Are you up for a challenge? Can you help?

Business Action on Deprived Areas

We show business just how much of a difference they can make in supporting a deprived area and to help them recognise the unique contribution they can make. We aim to do this through a ‘call to action’ to business asking them to work in partnership with the areas most in need.

Voluntary/community groups in Northern Ireland are finding it increasingly difficult to survive with the ever decreasing amounts of European funding available. What they need is to become more business like and efficient in how they operate. It is such a simple but effective idea for local businesses to become involved in helping to do this and there is a variety of ways that they can lend their expertise.

Mentoring

Business in the Community offers a wide range of opportunities for member companies to engage with various groups in society. In doing so they make a positive impact using their skills and expertise. On an individual or business wide basis, mentoring can be an extremely rewarding process.

ProHelp

With budgets being increasingly tight pro bono work is becoming a more popular way for businesses to make a contribution. Firms, which include public relations agencies recruitment consultancies, solicitors and surveyors, agree to donate a specified number of hours over the course of a year to help good causes. Charitable organisations then make requests through Business in the Community to use these services free of charge.  Call Mary Carson on Tel: (028) 9046 0606 for more information on ProHelp. If you are already involved in this programme you will find the ProHelp Best Practice Guides very useful.
