Raising the aspirations and achievements of young people in schools

Helping a child to discover the magic of reading is a truly rewarding feeling. The same can be said for seeing a young person who has struggled with numeracy realise that it is not so tough, thanks to your help. Business can play an important role in helping young people maximise their potential.

There are of course also very practical reasons why business is, and should be, interested in education as today’s young people are the employees of tomorrow. It is also a very visible and prominent way for an organisation to demonstrate its commitment to the local community.

Education programmes

We have developed a series of programmes to help improve literacy, numeracy and computing skills in local primary schools. We call these are Time to Read, Time to Count and Time to Compute programmes. Companies support their staff to volunteer an hour per week to work alongside Key Stage Two children (eight — ten year olds). These programmes have won both the Belfast Telegraph Business and NICVA/Camelot Link awards for Outstanding Community Involvement.

STEM Teacher Placement Programme 2010

The STEM Teacher Placement programme has been developed to help teachers promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects in school by using practical industry-based work experience placements. There are 36 placements available in 2010 to teachers of STEM subjects. The placements will inspire and engage teachers to inform and promote these subject areas and hence address the future need for highly numerate and analytical individuals in the workplace.
