Raising the levels of achievement of young people

Schools are a very visible component of every local community and business has a strong and positive sentiment towards education.  This is  based on a long term motivation to improve the skill base of future employees helping children and young people achieve his or her potential. The opportunities for business to make a real difference to improve the opportunities of children and young people are huge and include basic skills, vocational and employment skills for enterprise.  Business recognises the unique role it has to play in supporting schools in meeting the challenges of improving standards and in helping young people realise their inherent capacity.

Business Action on Education

To inspire and engage business to develop the skills of young people (in literacy, numeracy and ICT); to enhance their self-esteem and confidence; and to raise their aspirations for the future.

It is in this context, and concurrent with the introduction of the Learning for Life and Work curriculum in our schools, Business in the Community seeks to provide opportunities for business to support children and young people:

  • improve their basic skills and enjoyment of learning
  • develop their confidence and self-esteem
  • in raising aspirations for the future
  • in giving children positive adult role models from the world of work
  • in providing young people with a quality work experience
  • in building lasting relationships between business and schools

Future developments

Over the next three years Business in the Community seeks to ensure that the skills, resources and expertise of its members continue to impact positively on young people in education, to make a difference by supporting schools to improve the basic skills and aspirations of their pupils.
