Silver Surfers' Day 18 May 2012

It's all about May... the 18th May to get online!

Silver Surfers’ Day is a national day set aside to focus on helping the over 50s to have a taste of what the Internet offers and to help them gain the essential ICT skills to get started.  One of the most popular events in the Cares calendar and 2011 was no different. The results were truly amazing! Over 1,100 seniors were assisted by 250 business volunteers in over 80 locations across Northern Ireland- that's almost 6,000 hours of training in one day.

Background

Current statistics show that 91% of seniors over 65 years of age (and 64% of those aged between 50 and 64) have never used the Internet nor have the skills to do so . Considering how the Internet is becoming a fundamental tool in everyday life for shopping, booking travel and holidays, finding information and accessing government services, there is a need to ensure that the older person is not disadvantaged and excluded. Business in the Community (BITC) has been helping drive a campaign focused on improving digital inclusion for everyone.

How can I get involved?

Take time out to share your skills on the internet with someone who has yet to experience this wonderful technology. Set up an email account, introduce the to Google - their experience will be down to you! Enjoy the feel-good factor that comes with helping another individual and the pleasure that brings.

You could make a difference and help senior citizens across Northern Ireland with their IT skills. A popular event which always proves to be rewarding and enjoyable for all concerned, volunteer evaluations from 2010 showed that 100% of volunteers found participating in Silver Surfers' Day an enjoyable experience. This will take place in the majority of libraries across Northern Ireland, so you can volunteer and make a difference in your local community.

Now in its 9th year, Business in the Community, in partnership with the Delivery and Innovation Division of the Department of Finance and Personnel and housing associations, will be holding free taster sessions in a number of selected libraries across Northern Ireland on Silver Surfers’ Day. However, the success of Silver Surfers' Day would not have been possible without our dedicated business volunteers.

We require business volunteers to show people over 50 years of age the basics of . . .

  • how to use a computer
  • how to register for their free e-mail account
  • how to e-mail family abroad, book cheap flights, save time on shopping, find a computer course, bank safely and more

In addition, Business in the Community will provide free training for all volunteers. In previous years this training has been optional, however this year due to changes in the event format, volunteers must attend a training session.
