Start: How is BITC involved?

Start is the consumer-facing phase in The Prince’s Mayday Network, convened by BITC, which was created in 2007 as a result of HRH’s call to action to business to take action on climate change.

START is a continuation of BITC’s work in convening and fostering sustainable community partnerships and campaigns

Stephen HowardChief Executive, BITC

The Prince's Mayday Network has since become a year-round movement of almost 2,800 businesses progressing along the low carbon, resource efficient journey towards a sustainable future. It is aimed at inspiring and supporting individuals as well as businesses to understand what a sustainable future looks like, that it is a better future, and how they might start moving towards it.

Without the innovation and leadership of businesses in the Mayday Network, the sustainable products and services that we will all need in order to ‘Start’ this new way of living would not exist. In many places things are already underway to help us in the simplest of ways.

Business in the Community has been instrumental in bringing together the many inspirational partners that HRH will visit as his Tour passes through Bristol, Newcastle, Todmorden, Manchester, Nottingham, and Birmingham. BITC has been working with businesses to develop such partnerships which create, promote and support sustainable communities for 28 years. This includes helping them to maximise their positive impacts and minimise their negative impacts on people and the planet, be that through their products, services and operations or the way they interact with the communities in which they are based.

Stephen Howard, chief executive of Business in the Community, said: “Business in the Community’s expertise lies in helping the corporate sector to find the best way of working with local communities for the benefit of people and planet. We’re delighted to be hosting the tour by our President, The Prince of Wales, to encourage and celebrate local Start initiatives. This is a continuation of BITC’s work in convening and fostering sustainable community partnerships and campaigns.”
