Having identified Climate Change, Growth and Biodiversity as key issues to their sustainability, the recently announced £2.26billion five-year investment programme addressed each of these strategically.

Process

Climate change: risk is managed through an energy- and carbon-reduction strategy (6% and 14% respectively by 2010) and by ensuring Anglian Water’s infrastructure has the resilience to cope with potential changes though working with the Meteorological Office;
Growth: The region is one of the fastest growing in the country, so water efficiency is key.  Customers are informed and involved , and;
Biodiversity: the 2010-20 Biodiversity Action Plan emphasises working in partnership:   99.1% of their SSSIs are in favourable or recovering condition.

Impact

  • 180 energy-saving reduced costs by £7.6million since 2005/6, and electricity generation from renewables saved 7,060tonnes of carbon
  • 10% less business mileage through ‘why travel’
