KPMG LLP UK - EMA CR Network

Citigroup International Award 2006 in association with the International Business Leaders Forum and Business Action for Africa

KPMG firms launched their EMA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Corporate Responsibility Network in 2004. It consists of member firms in the EMA region which have a collective aim of delivering an effective and consistent CR strategy. This enables a local approach that fits within an organisation-wide CR framework, responding to business priorities and key stakeholders.

Processes

The objectives of the Network are to develop shared principles; share knowledge and KPMG firms best practice; and work collaboratively to help ensure greater impact within member firm communities.

Led by a dedicated working group, the Network has achieved significant success in a short time-frame. This includes developing shared principles and enabling participating practices to learn from each others experiences, while encouraging and facilitating local activity within a framework. It also facilitates a joined up and effective response to international incidents, such as the tsunami in 2004.

This joined-up approach to CR provides a number of business benefits for KPMG firms, which includes: attracting and retaining the best people; providing staff development opportunities; building the local and international brand; supporting business development and expansion into new markets.

Impact

  • This year's internal employee survey demonstrated that countries with a strong history of community involvement obtained more positive results than those with little involvement i.e. the UK firm achieved 21 percent better scores at the 'Commitment to our Communities' value as compared to the global consolidated results.
  • Membership has increased from 5 to 9 countries with the first EMA-wide volunteering project across 13 cities in 6 counties.
  • Last year, KPMG firms globally contributed more than 500,000 hours to local communities through the member firms activity, this includes more than 800 new volunteers being involved in the Network’s first international volunteering day.
