P&G Cobalt Work Placement Programme

I had always thought I would definitely go to university, but after taking part in this programme I’m swayed more towards apprenticeships

Steph Barnsley, Whitley Bay HighStudent

The P&G Work Placement Scheme is a two week programme, open to A-Level students wishing to gain experience of the wide range of careers available at P&G and to gain insight into how the business works.

Previously no fixed programme was in place, and any work experience at the site occurred infrequently. Tasks mainly consisted of photocopying and filing. P&G wanted to dramatically change this in order to give both the students and employees involved a meaningful, diverse, experience, giving them a clear understanding of the opportunities available in order to inspire them to apply for a future career within the company. Just as importantly, it allows the students to eliminate certain career options.

Before being accepted on the programme, students have to pass the recruitment process. This allows P&G to gauge the calibre of the students applying and also gives them valuable application/interview experience. Support is provided via a Mentoring Scheme, with each student allocated an experienced employee to address any concerns, provide career guidance and be a sounding board for ideas or issues.

The Work Placement Scheme includes visits to the local manufacturing and research & development sites to witness first hand the production, giving further insight and meaning of what they have learnt in each department. Students are able to visit a local radio station which brings to life P&G’s advertising strategy work. Students also attend a Basic Bookkeeping and Customer Service course – which, upon completion, they receive a certificate.

Impact

Community Impact

  • Following the work experience, 9 out of 10 students found the programme worthwhile and applied for a place on the P&G Apprenticeship Scheme
  • P&G has built new links with government bodies such as TWEBLO, and other businesses they impact

Business Impact

  • Employees have gained contacts in departments that they would not normally interact with, leading to cross department learnings
  • P&G has gained exposure to a pool of potential future employees who may not have considered P&G for a career
  • Applications have increased by approximately 50% over recent years, demonstrating the positive reputation and success of the programme
