North Staffordshire Warm Zone (NSWZ) in partnership with ScottishPower and National Grid

Power in Partnership Award 2009 - Big Tick winner

The NSWZ Partnership is committed to working together to alleviate fuel poverty and to provide homes in North Staffordshire with affordable warmth.

Processes

The partnership comprises of ScottishPower, National Grid and Stoke on Trent City Council and Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council.

A package of £15 million has been put together to fund this four-year programme, which provides assistance to every private home in the zone. Launched in 2007, it adopts a comprehensive, systematic approach, visiting and assessing all private sector households within the Local Authorities’ area.  Home energy assessments are carried out street-by-street, ward-by-ward, beginning with those most in need, and putting in place measures to address the areas identified as being key.

Impact

  • The success of the scheme will see 125,000 homes visited over 4 years providing households with a package of energy efficiency measures and targeted benefits advice changing the lives of homes visited.
  • Partners have been able to learn from each other, share best practice and enhance unique skills necessary in the social enterprise arena.
  • The programme has helped to improve staff morale and attract employees through a solid reputation as a corporate good citizen. It has also helped to build trust with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • The creation of 30 sustainable jobs of which over a third have come from the long-term unemployed.
