Project Shoreditch - regeneration through employee volunteering

Power in Partnership 2009 - Example of Excellence 2009 winner

Project Shoreditch is a partnership between East London Business Alliance (ELBA), Deutsche Bank, Linklaters, UBS and the Shoreditch Trust which promotes regeneration of the Shoreditch community through employee volunteering.

This innovative project was the first partnership of its kind (to involve collaboration between multiple companies focusing on a specific geographical area).  The project is managed by a broker who works closely with Shoreditch Trust staff and local organisations to identify and deliver ways in which employee volunteers can contribute to the regeneration of the area.

Impact

  • The project delivers a focused, long-term employee engagement programme and facilitates employee-volunteering projects which respond directly to community needs
  • The projects helps to build the capacity of grassroots organisations to enable them to effectively address priority issues including crime, health, access to employment and learning.
  • Since 2005, the project has facilitated over 4900 employee volunteering activities directly supporting Shoreditch organisations, supported over 85 local organisations.
  • 24% of the volunteers involved in the project have utilised their business expertise in some way.
  • More than £450,000 has been raised through gifts in-kind and leveraged through in-kind support
  • Community organisations overwhelmingly felt that the mentored and business advice support they’ve received has improved the stability and future prospects of their organisations, as well as raising their profile with their partners and stakeholders. (Rocket Science – Independent Evaluation 2007)
  • Feedback from employees who have participated in volunteering through Project Shoreditch, demonstrates that involvement in community projects improves employee morale, provokes innovating thinking and provides excellent cross business networking opportunity
