ESiT Limited - Green Commuting Scheme

Regional Sustainable Travel Award - Highly Commended

Companies don’t often get chance to do something beyond ‘business as usual’ that engages with staff, customers and the community -  it’s even better when those chances are cheap/cost neutral and simply require us to consider what we should do, tell people about it, and see the difference it makes.

In line with its CSR policy, ESiT is always seeking ways to reduce its impact on the environment. One of ESiT's major initiatives is the Green Commuting Scheme. The Company understands the complexities and benefits of a sustainable approach to business and it demonstrated a strong commitment and a clear customer driven vision, with exemplary ambition.

Green Commuting Scheme

The Scheme encourages staff to travel to work as often as possible by a means of transport with a lower environmental impact than single occupancy car travel e.g. public transport, on foot or bicycle, or car sharing. The company contributes £1 to charity for each Green Commute made by its staff.

Through this scheme ESiT intends to reduce carbon footprint, engage with local community, improve the health and wellbeing of the staff and reduce car park overcrowding.

The scheme has been embraced with great enthusiasm - half of ESiT’s staff now Green Commute at least once a week. Each year staff nominate two local charities to receive the money that is raised. As a result, as well as benefitting staff and the environment, from July 2006 to date the company has donated over £10,000 to the selected charities.

Environmental Management System

In February 2008 ESiT formalised their environmental endeavours by achieving Phase 3 of Acorn BS8555. A main objective of the resulting Environmental Management System is to reduce the Carbon Footprint from commuting and business travel. Initiatives include:

  • ensuring all company vehicles meet the EU recommended emissions level of  140g/km
  • requesting only diesel models when booking hire cars
  • flexible working hours to enable those with longer journeys to travel outside the rush hour
  • installation of office shower facilities to help those cycling, running or walking to work
  • advice on environmentally aware driving in the ESiT Driver’s Handbook
  • advice on the most environmentally friendly way to travel to customers’ sites

ESiT has developed and formalised its CSR policy as a result of the suggestions and beliefs of the people who work in the company.
