Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is committed to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2013, including reductions in travel impacts. The work on reducing travel related CO2 emissions links well into the vision and mission of MFRS, with clear objectives and good resources.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is delivering its travel plan through the following initiatives:

  • Vehicle Efficiency Project has 14 specific objectives around alternative vehicles, car sharing, travel booking, etc.
  • Creation of a Travel Hierarchy policy to define staff decisions regarding travel
  • Green and Healthy Transport Campaign week (8-12 March 2010), featuring Car Share postcode breakfasts, Energy Saving Trust's Smarter Driving Simulator,Bike Doctor Workshops at 5 MFRS sites, launch of Cycle to Work 2010, scheme trial bikes, Cycling Solutions Training and Assessment
  • Cycle to Work Guarantee Scheme 2010

Targets

Existing target: to reduce emissions of Carbon Dioxide by 30% from 1/04/08 to 31/3/13.

Site and team specific mileage and or fuel targets have not yet been devised; Data is being collected and evaluated for the first time.

Pool bike use: the organisation arranged a road race between Training Academy and HQ to show the 4.1 mile journey can be cycled safely and quickly in 17 minutes. A sweepstake raised £80 for chosen charities & drove interest.

Car share partnering: MFRS arranged 5 postcode breakfast sessions, inviting staff to attend on a particular day according to analysis of home postcodes to provide 5 geographical areas/ sessions. Speakers included Energy Saving Trust (with driver training simulator) Travelwise and Liverpool Bicycle Workers Co-operative).

Cycling risks: MFRS offered training through Cycling Solutions; bought or serviced pool bikes; provided pool bike safety equipment and designed ‘quiet route maps’ with Travelwise.

Promoting car sharing: Marked up designated preferential car share spaces, with signage to promote.

Cycling to Work: Launch of Cycle to Work scheme 2010 and signage to promote sites with secure bike stores and showers. Provision of Bike Doctor Sessions at Stations.
