East Midlands Airport - The Surface Access Strategy in motion

Regional Sustainable Travel Award - Commended

Kilometres are shorter than miles. Save gas, take your next trip in kilometres!

East Midlands Airport has undergone a major expansion over the past decade, and growth projections for the future envisage increasing traffic over the next 20 years. Its sustainable travel initiatives show a strong, holistic programme driven by regulatory pressures, with strong PR and communications packages.

The motivation

The airport commissioned a Strategic Public Transport Study in 2005 to develop ideas to ensure that:

  • employees and passengers at the airport would be able to use sustainable transport modes to access the airport
  • employers at the airport would be able to recruit employees from the East Midlands as previous public transport links made commuting travel to the airport from many areas of the East Midlands either prohibitively time-consuming, or prohibitively expensive, or both.

The initiatives

East Midlands Airport is committed to delivering a better transport infrastructure, with better bus services, car sharing schemes and facilities for cyclists.  When combined with measures that change travel behaviour, these initiatives will:

  • Increase business efficiency by improving services and reducing costs
  • Help employees reduce their travel costs and improve their work/life balance
  • Combat the effects of congestion and pollution on the environment
