Warwick’s Sustainable Transport – Putting Green Travel Plans into Practice

Regional Sustainable Travel Award - Commended

I just wanted to pass on my thanks to you for setting up this scheme so that I could benefit from it. Not only has it made a difference to my weekly journey, but seven weeks ago I broke my wrist.  Having found a liftshare person I was still able to get to work as they were exceptionally helpful and took me whenever they were going.  Without the lifshare scheme I would never have found this person and would have been totally stuck at home.  Many thanks!

Warwick’s future strategic development depends on the successful implementation of a sustainable transport strategy and more importantly its Green Travel Plan. The development and introduction of sustainable transport initiatives during the last 5 years have realised significant financial and reputational benefits for the University.

Green Travel Plan

Warwick’s Green Travel Plan was ranked 2nd out of all UK Universities that have a Green Travel Plan in an independent survey in 2008. The University shows clear, forward thinking and ambitious strategy, based on thorough understanding of risks. The desire to establish leadership in community and become a benchmark for other universities and inspiration to students is evident.

The formal car share scheme ‘WarwickShare’ demonstrates that a successful car share scheme does not require substantial capital investment or financial incentives to encourage or influence membership of the scheme. In the 20 months since its launch, the scheme has indirectly saved more than 800 tonnes of carbon-related emissions.

Additional Programmes

Additional programmes to promote sustainable transport alternatives have varied from a formal car share scheme for students (‘Take-a-Mate’), cycling infrastructure improvements, replacing fleet vehicles with low carbon vehicles, developing new bus routes and services, piloting a park & ride scheme for University open days and introducing alternative-fuelled vehicles. The three fully-electric Mega-Vans introduced into the fleet as part of the carbon management programme have now completed a total distance in excess of 10,000 miles.

University of Warwick is also participating in the Department of Transport Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme (LCVPP). In addition, Warwick is implementing Department of Transport ‘Cabled’ and ‘Plugged in Places’ projects for sustainable transport in the region.
