Maloney's Retail Stores

Small Company of the Year
Example of Excellence 2011

“It is a great pleasure to see how much Maloney Budgens have already involved themselves in our community. They have already sponsored the main event at the Shepperton Village Fair, and are also anxious to be involved in the forthcoming re-generation project. Their attitude towards our Village is magnificent.”

Robin SiderShepperton Town Councillor

Maloney’s Retail Stores is an independently family owned business whose stores are a vital part of their local community. Their concern for the environment has seen them become anchor stores for their community, working with schools, community groups and their suppliers. Since the implementation of their community plan they have seen a 10% increase in sales across their stores.

The story

The Maloney’s Budgens brand has been built on five strategic pillars including independence, support for small producers of quality food and partnerships with key community groups. These are underpinned by one core belief, as a family owned business whose stores are a vital part of their local community, they believe they should have a positive impact on those people who depend on them and in turn on whom they depend: customers, other local business, suppliers, staff and ultimately the environment.

The business developed a strategic community plan by talking to literally hundreds of people who made up the fabric of each of the communities in which the stores are based to understand how they could benefit the community in a sustainable way using both financial and human resources. This plan took two years to design and implement and was the first priority when brothers Vince and Dennis acquired the business in 2008.

Now firmly in action, the Community Plan has raised the profile of local suppliers and helped increase their sales, worked with schools in deprived areas to address their most urgent needs, supported staff through training and initiatives such as welfare loans and developed a home delivery service for those people with different levels of disability run on a not-for-profit basis, to name but a few.

Maloney's Retail Stores has successfully built its support into the long term aims of those groups, schools, local businesses and suppliers with whom they work. In addition to this they have created a culture of empowering and developing their employees.
