Veolia Water - reducing emissions

The Prince's May Day Network and Environmental Leadership Award Sponsored by Asda

Veolia Water’s partnership approach to eco-efficiency is reducing contractors’, customers’ and their own consumption of natural resources, cutting carbon emissions and costs, and recycling by-products.

Process

Veolia Water is the first UK company to successfully partner with a contractor, SQS, to obtain Highway Authority endorsement of the use of recycled excavated waste in road repairs, above legislative standards.  All sludge generated from drinking water production is diverted from landfill for use as soil conditioner on agricultural land.  Veolia’s commercial arm developed a process for treating leachate from landfill sites that produces both renewable energy and a saleable by-product.

Veolia Water encourages customers to save water through its award-winning Education Service (reaching 155,000 children, teachers and adults since 1998); by partnering with other water companies; and by offering free water-saving devices and water audits.

Impact

  • 5,300 tonnes of own carbon emissions reduced and avoided since 1996
  • Customers encouraged to save ca. 259 million litres of water in 2007-08
