HBOS Responsible Marketing Award 2007

You can produce all the guidance you want but the real problem is getting the message to the appropriate people (site operatives) ‘Safety from the Ground Up addresses that issue.

Speedy Hire is raising awareness of working at height health and safety regulations and taking their customer relations and reputation to new heights.

Processes

Speedy Hire is the leading tool and equipment hire company in the UK, operating a depot network of 300+ sites across the country, and whose customers largely consist of construction companies.

Following the introduction of new Working at Height legislation Speedy Hire identified a clear customer need for assistance in communicating the new regulations at site level. Research showed that 67% of site operatives were unaware of the new legislation that would enhance their safety on site, on a daily basis.

This created an opportunity for Speedy Hire to differentiate their brand, based on a commitment to Health and Safety. The Safety from the Ground Up campaign, although born out of the Working at Height regulations, is a broad Health and Safety Campaign addressing a variety of industry issues.

An internal steering group consisting of members from Sales, Marketing, Operations and Health and Safety developed the marketing campaign through a two way dialogue with all key stakeholders, employees, HSE, customers, suppliers and other related organisations.

A communications toolkit appropriate for all levels within an organisation was backed up by a national poster and advertising campaign. The programme was supported by the training of over 700 staff to deliver ‘toolbox talks’ on site to ensure the messages reached operatives with literacy issues.

Over 100,000 of these talks have been given and joint branding has been offered to suppliers on the communications pack. Speedy Hire has strengthened relationships right through their value chain. The communication packs are publicly available on their website to download, as Speedy Hire is keen to raise the bar on ‘Safety from the Ground Up’ not just for their customer base but for the industry whole industry.
