Health 4 schools is a well-established programme that advocates healthy lilfestyles in Gloucestershire communities through the promotion of healthy diet and active play to school children.

Processes

Participating schools are supported with funding, training, a resource pack, access to the health 4 schools website, a dedicated co-ordinator and hands-on facilitator support to implement the programme.

The programme takes a holistic approach focusing on four strands of activity: growing and learning about food, learning to cook, eating breakfast and active play.

Over the last three years, Kraft has invested a total of £575,000 in the development, implementation and management of the programme; the latest phase will bring in over £150,000 of additional investment.

Impact

  • 100 Gloucestershire schools and 24,000 primary and secondary school pupils now benefit from the programme
  • Health 4 schools has led to a culture change in 93% of schools with a 91% improvement in pupils’ healthy living awareness as a result of the programme
  • Increased engagement with and development of children with learning and behavioural difficulties through their participation in the programme
  • Professional development of 160 school staff through cookery workshops and achievement of a food hygeine qualification
  • Kraft’s profile has grown globally with the company being asked for advice on implementing a similar community programme in Bahrain
  • Health 4 schools facilitates regular dialogue with government stakeholders providing a powerful platform on which Kraft can build constructive relationships
