Big tick winner

Ernst & Young LLP, Birmingham Office Education Partnerships

Bank of America Merrill Lynch Education Award, supported by the Department for Children Schools and Families

Ernst & Young’s UK community investment program focuses on supporting young people in achieving their potential with a focus on the areas of Education and Entrepreneurship.  This is in line with the firm’s Global CR strategy.

Process

In the Birmingham office Ernst & Young have long standing relationships with two local schools in Inner City Birmingham and have a committed team who work on developing these partnerships in various ways. In 2007/8 people in the Birmingham office volunteered over 700 hours directly supporting 100 pupils and indirectly more than 2000.

Ernst & Young base their support very much on the time and skills they can offer the school rather than on financial aid. This allows them to take a whole school approach to supporting the young people and their teachers, getting involved in a range of activities from formal mentoring to teacher development.

Impact

  • 92% of Ernst & Young respondents felt their volunteering experience had a positive or significant impact on their relationship development skills
  • 71% of respondents felt their volunteering experience had a positive/significant impact on their leadership development.
  • After the Summer School, de-brief sessions are held with the students. Results demonstrate students remembered what they had learnt, and had put their knowledge into practice. Some of the students have part time jobs having drawn upon the interview/CV skills workshops.
