EDF Energy Networks, Safety in Education

Bank of America Merrill Lynch Education Award, suppported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families

In 2007, twelve children aged 10-19 died on the UK’s electricity supply network and around 100 more were injured. EDF Energy Networks are responsible for a large proportion of this network and believe they have a responsibility to prevent incidents that cause harm.

Process

Through their Social Commitments policy EDF Energy Networks pledged to build on their ambition to achieve ‘Zero Harm’ in their workforce by extending health and safety activity to support children, community groups and customers.  We believe it is achievable.

The ‘Safety in Education’ programme delivers on this Zero Harm objective.  It seeks to help pupils, their teachers and local communities gain a better understanding of electrical hazards.  In order to deliver this EDF Energy Networks has a dedicated team of Education Advisors.  They work with more than 100,000 primary and secondary schoolchildren every year and have committed to double this effort.

Impact

  • Criminal damage halved in the last year.
  • £1m per year saving in repair costs.
  • Increased knowledge of electrical safety among children and young people.
  • 10% fewer incidents caused by electrical equipment over the past year.
