AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood is committed to providing long-term improvements to the environment. Its Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) policy is backed by the CEO and adopted at all levels of the organisation, reaching all employees.

Processes

AstraZeneca sources its electricity supply from entirely renewable sources and has achieved £135,000 worth of energy savings. It has entered a voluntary Climate Change Agreement that gives an 80% rebate on the Climate Change Levy and strives for continuous improvement, necessary to retain its ISO 14001.

Impact

  • In 2004 engineering projects contributed £135,000 worth of energy savings (equivalent of 1910 tonnes of carbon dioxide), against a target of £52,000.
  • Developed a domestic recycling facility for staff in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council.
  • Works with local groups including the Leicestershire Environmental Business Club (LEBC), Beacon Network and the East Midlands Business Environmental Club (EMBEC). The site has supported and gains benefit from events run by these organisations, and makes every effort to share knowledge and offer advice
  • Sources its electricity supply from entirely renewable sources and gets an 80% rebate from the levy paid on its use of gas to run its boilers as part of a Climate Change Agreement (CCA)
  • Hybrid pool cars - electric/diesel cars available for staff business travel
  • Uses solvent waste with a high calorific value (above 5MJ/Kg) from the Pilot Plant as a substitute fuel in the cement making process thus reducing the use of conventional fuel and the fuel required to incinerate this hazardous waste
  • 25% of hazardous waste is recycled
  • Won the East Midlands Sustainable Development Award 2005
