BAE Systems - cleared for take off

The Mayday Network

In setting energy related SMART objectives for all levels of staff BAE Systems have also cut costs along the way.

BAE Systems is the premier global defence and aerospace company delivering a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces.  They have major operations across five continents, with customers and partners in more than 100 countries.  The company has a number of sites across the North West.

BAE Systems encourages its employees to look at the impact they have on the environment and is developing ‘tools’ that will allow them to reduce and minimise it both at home and work. This can include anything from changing from conventional to low energy light bulbs through to lift sharing which reduces carbon emissions as well as congestion on the roads.

They have developed a dedicated web site for employees to make their pledge to reduce their personal footprint. Employees are able to sign up to make changes at home, work and in the community. The site features discounts for products such as insulation, energy efficient boilers, bicycles etc. that will help to reduce their carbon footprint. Staff form teams and compete in a 'league' to engender the spirit of competition.

The company takes part in Bike Week - a national initiative which runs every year to promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy viable option to get around for commuting and leisure. To support the initiative employees at the Warton and Samlesbury sites mixed themselves a healthy fruit smoothie using a bike powered blender which was set up in the staff restaurant.
