Power in Partnership Award for Excellence 2008

This is an excellent example of a genuine multi-agency partnership coming together with leadership, vision and ambition to meet a genuine society need.  Without the partnership and the confidence it gave to other partners, funders and stakeholders it is doubtful that we would have managed to get this project off the ground at all.  BHP Billiton’s contribution is an excellent example of genuine corporate social responsibility where they have had a sophisticated approach to creating a sustainable legacy around addressing a real need in the community.

BHP Billiton, North Wales Police, North Wales Fire & Rescue, DangerPoint – an innovative partnership approach to safety.  DangerPoint is a charity and company limited by guarantee which aims to educate children, young people and other members of the North Wales community about their safety.

Process

The three main partners behind DangerPoint – BHP Billiton, North Wales Police and North Wales Fire & Rescue – have all provided continued support through active Chief Officer leadership, significant resources and lasting commitment to developing and managing DangerPoint.

Over the last 12 months they have worked hard to involve a range of further partners as funding stakeholders and voluntary sector agencies to ensure the project’s sustainability.

The level of leadership has continued throughout the project and has been one of the critical success factors ensuring the project has the continued backing of all the relevant agencies across North Wales and beyond.

To date more than 16,000 children have attended DangerPoint, representing 50.2% of the schools in North Wales.

DangerPoint’s established evaluation method is now successfully used to set targets relating to the increase in knowledge obtained from visits – schools in Gwynedd achieved a pre visit score of only 48% correctly answered questions, while post visit, this figure increased to 90%.

Quarterly reporting meetings to Trustees ensure stakeholders see first hand the impact of their participation in the development process.  It also allows DangerPoint to continuously benefit from the pool of resources available from each of the partner organisations, for example marketing expertise from BHP Billiton, child protection advice from North Wales Police and advice in running youth projects from North Wales Fire & Rescue.

Each of the partners has seen direct benefits to their organisations:

Impact

  • BHP Billiton is meeting objectives outlined in its Company Charter by supporting its local community with sustainable activity
  • North Wales Police has built strong links with schools, Local Education Authorities and the business community
  • North Wales Fire & Rescue have been able to progress their engagement with schools and young people.
  • Visitor numbers increased by 50% in 2007
  • The project has been developed further through an outreach programme ‘Now I Can Crawl’ with Flintshire Local Health Board, offering home safety advice to families with young and vulnerable parents, while CrashPoint offers road safety advice for young drivers
